Edcel Lagman dismayed with Duterte’s 1st year

The controversial speech of Senator Manny Pacquiao criticizing Albay Representative Edcel Lagman shows how the latter is consistent for attacking the current administration.

In 2016, an article from Philippine Star showed how Lagman only had negative things to say about Duterte's first year in office as he highlighted extrajudicial killings, traffic, peace negotiations, and contractualization issues.

With an illegal drug war campaign that was fraught with human rights issues, Lagman felt that Duterte “has done nothing good” for allegedly spurring extrajudicial killings even if it seems only opposition members have executed legal actions on this complaint and so far nothing proven yet.

He has relentlessly embarked on a deadly campaign against drug users and traffickers. This violent policy has dismally failed in other countries like Thailand, Columbia and Mexico,” Lagman said.

The congressman pointed out the peace negotiations with the CPP-NDF (Communist Party of the Philippines-National Democratic Front) was unaccomplished and seems to have reverted back to scratch.

“One of his campaign promises, which was initially taking off, was the peace settlement with the CPP-NDF (Communist Party of the Philippines-National Democratic Front). But the peace talks are now back to the drawing board,” Lagman said.

Traffic gridlock especially in Metro Manila is still at its worst while “mass poverty still stalks the land”, which makes Lagman conclude that Duterte’s first year was all bad.

Lagman’s disappointment also stems from Duterte’s independent foreign policy which he opines as “belittling or even rejecting traditional diplomatic and trade partners like the United States and countries belonging to the European Union.”

It seems the Albay representative resented Russia and China as he feels that establishing ties with them is a bad idea.

Sacrificing Philippine sovereignty for contingent aid and investment from an expansionist and militarist China is definitely not a measure of an independent foreign policy,” he said.

Despite these criticisms, somewhat expectant from someone who belongs to the Yellows, another political figure gave his opinion on Duterte’s performance and lauded the President for how he handled the Marawi clash.

Quezon City Representative Winston Castelo noted the “professionalism” of government forces and zero complaints from the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) regarding their conduct in the Marawi war.
