Following his controversial remark “shit happens” about the recent death of a 13-year old girl in a drug bust operation, Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa has been reminded by former Vice President Jejomar "Jojo" Binay to mind his words.

On his own column in Manila Bulletin, Binay said Dela Rosa must comport himself according to the high standards of the office and realize that his words now carry weight.

The former VP did not name Dela Rosa in his article but was obviously referring to the former national police chief and corrections chief.

The neophyte senator has barely warmed his seat. Perhaps it has not dawned on him that the work of a senator is about thinking before speaking. It is not about talking tough or parroting the mannerism of one’s superior. He needs to realize that his survival in office is no longer dependent on pleasing a superior. He is now beholden only to the people and the Constitution,” Binay said.

With the senator expected to head the Committee On Public Order And Illegal Drugs, Binay said he hopes he will “not defend the indefensible.”

He should ferret out the truth, no matter how painful, and hold people accountable,” Binay said.

And I hope that by now, the good senator realizes he should be careful with his words,” he added.
