Just recently, De Leon called on the Otso Diretso candidates and challenged them to “face the Chinese” and go to Spratlys islands. This was a test from De Leon to see if the candidates were serious in their claim.

Putting security at risk

1 day after De Leon’s challenge, nobody answered him back and just called it off.

"I now declare the Spratly challenge OFF. I believe the message has been delivered loud and clear. I won't put to task the candidates of Ocho ocho, anymore, of either accepting or rejecting the challenge,” he said.

In his statement, de Leon said that he did not care which side of the issue of the West Philippine Sea the Otso Diretso stand by, but he says that it should not endanger national security.

He claims that when the Otso Diretso team went to Scarborough Shoal, it could have led to a conflict.

He goes on to say that it can dictate that country’s engagement to other nations.

Going on, he says that he holds everyone to a high standard, most importantly Gary Alejano, whom he says deserves his medals but was shocked by what he had displayed.

Ending his statement, de Leon said that he expected more out of Alejano and suspects that this “downgrade” may have been contributed by “the company he keeps”.

Read his full statement here:

"I now declare the Spratly challenge OFF. I believe the message has been delivered loud and clear. I won't put to task the candidates of Ocho ocho, anymore, of either accepting or rejecting the challenge. However, let me be clear about some things: I do not care where you stand on the issue of the WPS as long as you do it in a forum that does not endanger national security. Your antics of going to Scarborough is fraught with miscalculations that has the potential to drag the whole country, unnecessarily, into a conflict sans a national consensus except for the selfish reason of getting votes and making our leadership look bad. You even taunt our security forces. Should anything happen to you in the course of doing your antics, you cease to become Ocho ocho. You become Filipinos whom the whole nation, including me, will have to stand for, even if I do not like most of your faces. I mean, all of your faces. We have a legally elected leadership that will dictate the tempo of our engagement with other countries, and we have an opposition, like you, who are free to present your counter argument. But d gadem, we do not expect you to do acts that will compromise everybody without, again, a national consensus. Lastly, I singled out Alejano because I am holding him to a higher standard than anybody from his group. He is a reservist and he proudly wears the uniform. He went through various schoolings, significant of which is the General Staff Course. I can actually vouch that he deserves the medals he wears on his breast and equally deserving of a Medal for Valor. If there was anybody I would vote for, it would be him. Now, if there is anyone from the Ocho ocho, who would know and has the knowledge of the dangers of "brinkmanship", it would be him too. I also least expect him to taunt our security forces, an organization he used to belong to. What happened? I really don't know. Maybe, it's the company he keeps." - General Orlando E de Leon"
