Plunderers run for senate, it’s disrespect and cynicism – Pangilinan

Enrile, Estrada and Revilla have standing plunder charges before the Sandiganbayan, as they are accused of receiving funds and being actively involved in the P10 billion pork barrel scam that created a big scandal years ago.

Revilla filed his candidacy through his wife Lani Mercado, while Enrile and Estrada filed themselves as they are out on bail for the duration of their trial.

Amidst their pending case, Sandiganbayan said that even if there is a conviction, they will not be disqualified from running for office.

"Conviction per se is not a disqualification. The judgment of conviction must be final and executory," said Sandiganbayan Presiding Justice Amparo Cabotaje-Tang.

Senator Francis Pangilinan said, however, that the fact that these three plunderers are running “shows the level of disrespect and cynicism in our democracy and electoral system.”

He has instead, urged the people to vote for the opposition slate as he assures the public that they are “pro-democracy, pro-poor and pro-progress.”

The opposition slate include Magdalo party-list Representative Gary Alejano, Senator Paolo Benigno Aquino IV, De La Salle University law dean Chel Diokno, former Bangsamoro Transition Commission member Samira Gutoc, former solicitor general Florin Hilbay, election lawyer Romulo Macalintal, former senator Mar Roxas, and former House deputy speaker Erin Tañada.

Pangilinan further said that the opposition slate will be the one to fight against the anti-democratic an anti-poor policies of the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte.

"Specifically, we believe that a creeping authoritarianism describes our national political situation," Pangilinan said.

"We believe we have to reclaim wider democratic spaces to push our common agenda of a progressive and prosperous Philippines primarily through the 2019 elections," he said.
