A spike in victims

According to the date provided by the health department, there has been a 550 percent increase in the measles cases in the country. They said that this data collected from January 1 to February 6 is far greater than that compared to the same period in the year before.

Not only that, but also that these cases have worsen to include the deaths of at least 44 people in Manila in January of this year only.

This is truly an alarming scenario and many fingers are pointed towards Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) chief Persida Acosta.

Acosta to blame

Acosta has been the target of blame since this alarming incident has taken place.

The chief has been saying for months on end that the vaccine called Dengvaxia was harmful to children. She and her office have also backed investigations on claims that the vaccine has caused the death of children.

Her widely spread sentiment has of course influenced some Filipino people. Because of this, a lot of parents have decided not to vaccinate their children for the uneducated fear that the vaccine might also cause harm and death to their own offspring.

Celebrities call to vaccinate

Different celebrities have taken it upon themselves to use their influence and inform he Filipino people how dangerous it is for them not vaccinate their children.

You can thank the fear-mongering of Persida Acosta et al for this measles surge,” said singer Leah Navarro.

She began it by making unfounded claims re: Dengvaxia and worsened things by doubting the effectiveness of vaccinations in general. Echoed by radio commentators,” she added.

It’s time those who created the hysteria admit their mistakes and do corrective measures,” said musician Jim Paredes. “Filipino kids are dying. If they got vaccinated this would not happen.”

Not just that, but also, Paredes calls out ABS-CBN to punish the broadcasters Noli De Castro and Ted Failon who he believes contributed greatly to the mass hysteria caused by PAO.

These two have been covering the Dengvaxia issue and the angles that they have taken in their stories mainly showed the side of PAO who was doing investigations on the claims that the vaccine caused death.

Even Liway director Kip Oebanda said “Wow DOH just confirmed a [measles] outbreak in NCR. At the rate we are going, we don’t even need to criminalize 9 year-olds anymore because kids will die before that.

PAO on the defense

In response to these accusations, Department of Justice chief Menardo Guevarra said that Acosta “was only doing her job” and had not meant to scare the public about vaccines.
