Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque has said that President Rodrigo Duterte was pleased with recently appointed Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo Puyat’s work to fight corruption within the department.

She was appointed with the express mandate to do good and to fight corruption, and she’s doing just that. President’s very pleased,” Roque said.

When Wanda Teo resigned her post as secretary, Puyat was then appointed.

Puyat’s first move when she was appointed was to order all tourism undersecretaries and assistant secretaries to file courtesy resignation.

The Palace is supportive of her move, said Roque.

Very supportive. Of course, all Cabinet Secretaries, especially those who had just been appointed, enjoy full trust and confidence of the President, and we would want them to have a fresh start, and we would want them to pick their own management team so that they can be the most effective in their jobs,” Roque said.

Puyat recently said that she found irregularities in the projects of the previous administration in DOT, and found them to be “overwhelming”.

In an interview, Puyat shed tears as she revealed that she was astonished about the degree of corruption in the agency. She alleges that is reached hundreds of millions of pesos.

She also suspended all DOT projects until they are reviewed by the Commission on Audit.

Among the projects she suspended was the “Buhay Carinderia” project to which Cesar Montano, Tourism Promotions Board chief operating officer, paid P80 million even before the project was finished.

According to Puyat, she has already met with Montano to discuss the incident.
